Julie Want - Clinical Psychologist

177B Military Road, Neutral Bay, 2089. Ph: 0410 464 987

If you suffer anxiety, depression or are struggling with long-term difficulties in relationships, I can help

Julie trained in and applies evidence-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as her foundation treatment model. CBT incorporates psychodynamic techniques, mindfulness strategies and a practical focus on behaviours that can help build resilience and provide the tools to manage anxiety and depression.

Julie also uses Schema Therapy, another powerful therapeutic model influenced by attachment theory and object relations theory, that seeks to identify the forces and events that have shaped our view of the world since childhood and may still influence, perhaps unhelpfully, current behaviours and interactions. Julie attended specialist training in Schema Therapy at the Schema Therapy School at Oxford in the UK in 2019.

For clients seeking short term assessment and treatment, even where quite severe symptoms may be present, CBT can provide useful and practical strategies that one can apply immediately. For more complex issues, or where there is a need for deeper exploration of the self and the underlying causes of unhelpful mood and behaviour, Schema Therapy can help to build positive and lasting change. Unearthing these childhood experiences and consequent self beliefs is a fascinating and liberating process for clients, providing them with a way to build healthier coping styles in adulthood.

Julie is an experienced Clinician, having worked for the past 15 years in both the public and private sector. She now has her own practice in Neutral Bay in which she works mainly with individuals and with their families, when indicated. She liaises with specialist relationship and family therapists when this multidisciplinary approach will be helpful, particularly in managing complex adolescent presentations.

During the past decade Julie has treated Anxiety Disorders such as Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), including "Pure O" - intrusive thoughts, and social phobia. Depressive Disorders, Adjustment Disorder and bipolar affective disorder are other areas of Julie's experience and interest.

Julie's clinical training and deep experience enable her to work with clients to develop an individual treatment program which is holistic – addressing the emotional, mental and physical aspects of functioning, behaviour and mood.
